Our Largest Camper Conversion Project of the Year: A Custom VW Transporter LWB Highline

Recently, we completed our largest and most exciting project of the year – a custom conversion of a VW Transporter LWB Highline DSG Auto Tailgate. This was no ordinary van, and our customer came to us with a clear vision of what they wanted: a van that could serve as the ultimate home on wheels, equipped for any adventure, and styled to perfection.
After multiple consultations, both over Zoom and around our workshop table, we crafted a fully bespoke camper conversion that exceeded our customer’s expectations. Let’s take you through the journey of this unique build, showcasing how we brought this van to life.
A Bespoke Design to Suit Every Need
Our client chose our signature Endless Summer package, but wanted several custom modifications to make the most of their van’s extra space. The long wheelbase (LWB) VW Transporter gave us the perfect canvas to work on, and we knew this project would require precision and creativity to meet their needs.
1. Custom Kitchen
The heart of any campervan conversion is the kitchen, and for this project, we built a sleek and modern space designed to maximise functionality. The kitchen features slate grey cabinets, perfectly paired with an oak worktop to create a stylish, yet durable cooking area. We fitted a gas hob and sink to ensure the van was ready for any on-the-road cooking. To further optimise space, we installed an underslung water tank, which freed up more room inside while still allowing for a practical shower outlet.
2. Creature Comforts for Year-Round Travel
To keep our customer comfortable during colder months, we installed a diesel heater. It’s essential for those chillier nights in the van, especially when venturing into the wilderness.
Additionally, a Boo fridge was fitted, providing ample space for food and drinks, ensuring everything stays fresh during long trips.
3. The Smart Bed System
The centrepiece of the van’s interior is the Smart Bed on rails, which slides back and forth, offering a unique level of versatility. When travelling, the bed can be moved to maximise boot space, making it ideal for storing extra gear, just like a regular car boot. At night, the bed slides forward to transform the van into a cozy sleeping space, allowing our customer to rest in total comfort.
4. Luxurious Seating and Scenic Views
The seats, both in the front and rear, have been reupholstered in sleek black leather, complemented by subtle black stitching. This not only adds a luxurious touch but also ensures durability for years to come.
Above, we installed a Westdubs poptop with a full scenic canvas, allowing for panoramic views when parked up in beautiful locations. Whether it’s watching the sunset over a beach or stargazing in the wilderness, this van has it all. When it’s time to settle down, the scenic canvas can be closed, offering privacy and warmth, along with map reading lights for reading or relaxing.
Thoughtful Storage Solutions and Extras
One of the challenges in any camper conversion is ensuring there’s enough storage space while maintaining comfort and usability. We addressed this with several clever solutions:
• Vanshades blinds with integrated fly screens were installed to offer shade and privacy, while still allowing airflow when needed.
• The chair pod system, hidden underneath the tailgate, stores deck chairs when not in use, saving valuable space inside the van.
• The Loc8 table, tucked inside the sliding door, can be used both inside and outside the van, making it perfect for alfresco dining or work on the go.
Exterior Styling: Adventure-Ready and Eye-Catching
While the inside of the van was designed with comfort and practicality in mind, the outside had to match its sleek, adventure-ready vibe. We fitted a detachable tow bar, fully coded to ensure the parking sensors operate correctly, only triggering when the tow bar is in use. This makes parking hassle-free, even when towing a trailer.
For exterior aesthetics, the van was treated to our exterior styling package. We added a gloss front, with stylish Mojave beige pinstripes to give the van a modern, sophisticated look. A rear spoiler, black side bars, and a full surround body moulding set enhanced the van’s appearance even further, making it look as rugged as it is refined.
To top it all off, we fitted the van with brand new black swamper-look alloy wheels, ensuring it stands out on the road and can handle the rougher terrains that await.
